Angel America has been making art her whole life. “I remember painting, collaging and even taking photos since I was a child.” She received her BFA in Studio Art at James Madison University in Virginia in 2010. Some of the readers may know of Angel from her brand @americanhenna or her photography business Angel America Photography; but she also enjoys ceramics and printmaking when she has an opportunity to get outside her usual mediums.
Angel got into Henna five years ago when she had started working at local gallery and tattoo parlour, HOWL. Initially, she was hired for a sales associate position but she says when Alainna saw she was an experienced artist, she asked her about henna tattoos.
“Ndola Pensey showed me the ropes. The first day I shadowed her, we had a wedding client who was getting ready for her sister’s wedding. I said I was just going to watch- but the woman told me jump in and do it so she’d would be done faster…and I have been doing it ever since!”
American Henna has experience with weddings, festivals, private parties, etc. etc. but some of her favorites experiences have been with her maternity clients. “Almost every time, I’ll see some little feet or hands pressing against the mother’s stomach wondering what I’m doing out here. It’s adorable and I also like working on such a large stretched canvas, lol. The result of an adorned belly is such a beautiful blessing – especially for the mother who is expecting within the next three to four weeks.
